I absolutely love this spooky Jack-o-Lantern couple!  I found this image on Halloween Lovers Facebook page, but I'm not sure who the original artist is...it looks like its signed lr or b  with a date of 2010.  Please let me know if you recognize these images, so I can credit and link the artist.

Ghosts in the Graveyard

Not a long blog today---just wanted to share this wonderful vintage ghost illustration I found over on the Good Good blog! Make sure you check out the link for several more awesome images the author has shared. They're all awesome, but I think this is my favorite of the bunch. There is a lot going on in what appears on the surface to be a pretty straight-forward image. Why are two ghosts sad, one ghost indifferent, and the rest cheerful? What's the deal with the skeleton crawling out of his grave? And is that snow falling from the sky...or just a starry backdrop? I guess there's no reason to overthink it---just enjoy the Ghosts in the Graveyard!

Haunted Halloween Farm

I have a confession. I used to hate the color orange. I still loved Halloween, but my aesthetic definitely left out anything pumpkin-colored. But, as I've gotten older, my tastes have definitely changed. I have found myself falling in love with absolutely anything featuring black and dark burnt orange. There is just something so vintage and nostalgic about this color combination---I honestly cannot get enough of it! 

A beautiful example of such is this painting by Ryta (rytaray) entitled Haunted Halloween Farm. At one time, prints were available of this visually stunning piece of art, but unfortunately do not seem to be available at this time. However, go check her out on eBay and maybe you can get lucky! She has a wonderful collection of similar vintage images in her shop. 

Pumpkin Sky

I recently stumbled across this beautiful image of a Jack-o-Lantern in the clouds on the Facebook page, Halloween Hollow Haunts. I instantly fell in love with it! It is a work by artist Artem Rhads Chebokha, and is titled Witchland.  Arten doesn't seem to concentrate solely on spooky Halloween creations, but he totally nailed the spirit of the season with this beautiful piece! 

Dracula's Pez

Happy Vampire Week! Halloween may officially be over, but the spooky fun lasts all year long here at Theresa's Halloween Wonderland. Let's kick off this month's theme week with an original art piece by Tyler Davis, entitled, "How Would You Eat Pez." Davis originally listed prints of the charcoal and gauche creation to his Etsy store in March of 2008. If I worked for the advertising department at Pez, I'd definitely be giving this young man a call!

All is Vanity

I love optical illusions in art. I especially love when the optical illusion involves a skull...like we have here in this famous piece, All is Vanity. It was drawn in 1892 by Charles Allan Gilbert and later sold to Life Magazine, which sold prints. You can read more about it at Deceptology! 

Skeleton Week: Van Gogh's Skull

Happy Skeleton Week! Since Halloween is fast approaching, I thought it might be fun to start throwing in a few theme weeks, starting with an underrated icon of the season: the skeleton! Each day this week, expect a new post dealing with skeletons, bones, or skulls....starting with today's art feature!

You've probably seen this image before, but did you know that its actually a painting by famed artist, Vincent Van Gogh? This oil on canvas masterpiece is entitled Skull of a Skeleton with Burning Cigarette. It is believed to have been painted during the winter of 1885-1886 while Van Gogh was attending art classes at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Since 1973, the painting has been on a permanent loan at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Definitely check out the Wikipedia page for this painting for more information!

It's been awhile since I shared a piece of Halloween art! I found this lovely, yet untitled piece by Stacy Hone of the Etsy shop, PaintingsOfPeace. The original 11''x14'' acrylic painting has been sold, but please check out her shop for more wonderful, original pieces of art!

Alan Dellascio Art

I've recently discovered ANOTHER artist who specializes in absolutely gorgeous Halloween and Fall paintings. Salem, Massachusetts native Alan Dellascio, also known online as 'painteral613,' creates this awesome interpretations of different houses, featured in gray scale, with pops of color in the form of bright orange pumpkins. I REALLY had a hard time picking just ONE painting to feature here, so I highly encourage you to check out the links below for more examples of Alan's work. October Shadows

I have ANOTHER favorite Halloween artist---William Basso. And while his work is arguably quite different in style and subject from that of Catherine Holman, its no less beautiful with a vintage twist. For this first feature on Basso, I've chosen to highlight his October Shadows. From the artist himself:

"October Shadows" Collage and mixed media mounted on canvas. 20"x16"- This was done as a promotional image, a sort of "call for entries", for a Halloween themed art show of the same name. I wanted to pay homage to the "Vanitas" paintings of the 17th century Dutch masters. I felt that this captured the theme of "Halloween in Art" while adding a slightly surreal twist. ©William Basso

Pirate's Cove Halloween

Catherine Holman is probably my favorite artist in the world. Her beautiful, yet sweet, Halloween paintings are exactly what I WANT small-town Halloween to look like: full of whimsy, full of nostalgia, and beautiful colors that SCREAM autumn. Over the course of this blog, I'll be posting many, many more works by Catherine Holman, but to get things started, I chose this one, entitled Pirate's Cove Halloween.

Here is what Catherine has to say about this image:

In Pirate's Cove as soon as the moon rises high in the sky, tiny goblins run from house to house giggling and gathering treats of caramel apples, popcorn balls, candy corn and various sweets and surprises. Adults and scared pets warm themselves by an inviting fire as they supervise their surroundings. Pirates anchor their ship in the cove curiously spying on these shenanigans as a ghost slips over the bridge chasing a very tiny witch and her suspicious black cat. This scary evening includes tiny tots and their bewildered dog dressed in strange uncomfortable attire being pulling by the wagon load through a small cemetery. Bugs and various creepy crawlers, pirates, mummies, and a superhero swarm the streets. A sweet princess being escorted by a mouse standing on two feet is about to magically fill her treat bag when she taps on the door, demurely smiles, and chants "trick or treat!"

Just a Brief Hiatus!

After a brief hiatus, Theresa's Halloween Wonderland is back, ready with plenty of new articles, artwork, recipes, and other Halloween goodies for all of you out there.  Honestly, I don't have an excuse as to why I haven't posted anything in nearly a whole month...except that I've been bored and lazy, lol.  I apologize....but cannot guarantee it won't happen again, so please just bear with me.
